Overview
Beijing performs its imperial splendor at full volume: a central axis, gate after gate, and roof upon layered roof. Then the train heads west into Shanxi, and the volume softens. Temples shift to wooden structures, carvings become polychromatic sculptures, and faces begin to acquire distinct expressions: the Song-dynasty court ladies of the Jinci Temple, over two thousand statues in Shuanglin Temple, and the stone Buddhas of Tianlong Mountain spanning four dynasties. Seven days, one civilization, two voices. Souvenirs are a habit: long after returning home, you find yourself unconsciously tracing the outline of an eave.

Walk the Central Axis into the Forbidden City and climb Jing Mountain for a panoramic view; in the afternoon, head to the Temple of Heaven.

Take a cable car up to the Mutianyu Great Wall, with the walking distance adjustable to your fitness level.

· West to Taiyuan: the Shanxi Museum
Arrive in Taiyuan by high-speed rail and explore the local architectural and trade history at the Shanxi Museum.
· Jinci and Tianlongshan
In the morning, explore the wooden architecture and painted sculptures of Jinci Temple, and in the afternoon, visit the Tianlongshan Grottoes.
· Shuanglin and Pingyao
Depart from Taiyuan to visit the colorfully sculpted Shuanglin Temple and Pingyao Ancient City, returning to Taiyuan in the evening.

VPN & Internet Access
What's blocked
Google, Gmail, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and most Western news sites are inaccessible in China without a VPN.
Download before you leave
It's nearly impossible to download a VPN once inside China. Install and test at home. Recommended: Astrill (most reliable), Mullvad, ExpressVPN — subscribe to at least two in case one stops working.
Hotel Wi-Fi tip
Some hotels block VPN connections on their Wi-Fi. Use your phone's mobile data as a hotspot if the VPN drops.
Good news
WhatsApp works perfectly through a VPN, so your messaging stays unchanged. Apple iMessage and Signal also work.

China is cashless
Alipay and WeChat Pay are used for almost everything — restaurants, taxis, markets, tickets. Cash is rarely accepted in cities.

240-hour visa-free transit
Citizens of 55+ countries (including USA, UK, most of EU, AUS, NZ, Canada) can enter China visa-free for up to 10 days if transiting through eligible ports. This covers our 12-day itinerary only if you have a confirmed onward flight.
Processing time
Apply 4–6 weeks before departure. Standard processing: 4–7 business days. Express (3 days) and same-day options available at most Chinese consulates.

Is China safe?
China consistently ranks among the safest countries for foreign tourists. Violent crime against visitors is extremely rare. Cities have extensive CCTV coverage and a visible police presence.
Emergency numbers
Police: 110. Ambulance: 120. Your concierge is your first call for any non-emergency situation — she has local contacts for every city on the itinerary.
Health & medications
Bring a full supply of any prescription medication. International pharmacies exist in major cities but may not carry your brand. Travel insurance is required — we can recommend policies that cover China specifically.
Language
English fluency outside hotels and tourist sites is limited. Your guides all speak English. We provide a printed pocket card with essential Chinese phrases and emergency contacts for every traveler.

Shanxi holds older layers of Chinese building and religious art: wooden halls, painted clay, Buddhist grottoes and a walled banking town, all within practical drives of Taiyuan.
No. The game drew from Shanxi's monuments and sculptural tradition; this route stands in that tradition at Shuanglin, Jinci and Tianlongshan rather than chasing scene matches.
Moderate and adjustable. The cable car handles the main climb at Mutianyu; temple, museum and old-town days are level walking.
Tastes diverge over a week. Breakfast is included, while your guide recommends and books other meals around your tastes and you pay the restaurant directly.
