Why start in Chengdu instead of Beijing?

Because the country then arrives in the order it happened, and because Chengdu is a gentler place to land. Day three puts you on a waterworks from the third century BC; day five on the first emperor's army; day eight in the palace two later dynasties ran; day eleven on the Bund. By the last night you can place the skyline against something, which is not true if you see it in reverse. The cost of this choice is honest: Chengdu has thinner direct-flight coverage than Beijing, and some guests reach it on a connection. We check your inbound itinerary and put the connection in writing before you order.

Four train rides in twelve days. Is that a lot of time on the move?

Less than four flights would be. All four are high-speed rail, city center to city center, and none of them needs an airport. Two are half days, Chengdu to Xi'an and Xi'an to Beijing; the Beijing to Shanghai run is an afternoon; the Dujiangyan pair on day three are short hops out and back with your bags left in the hotel. Your driver and guide take you to the station and meet you at the other end. Seat class for this route is being finalized, so your quote states the seat class of each segment on your order in writing, and we take no order without it.

Will the Great Wall cable car be running if we go in December?

The ascent at Mutianyu is by cableway and open chairlift, and it is inside your price. What we cannot do is promise it in December: snow and ice close both, and we do not yet hold the operating rules for November and December. So quotes in those two months state the ascent arrangement for your exact departure in writing before you pay. If the ascent is closed on your dates, the wall day is rebuilt around what is open and you still get the whole day, the vehicle, the guide and a section of wall; what you would lose is the cable car ride, not the Great Wall.

Most guests on this route do not. UK, most European, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passports enter visa-free for stays days, and we check your 12 days plus any extra days in China against that window before you pay. The current policy runs through December 31, 2026, so departures on or before December 20, 2026 finish inside it. US passports are different: the US is not on that list and 12 days is longer than the ten-day transit policy allows, so US guests hold a Chinese tourist or business visa, applied for in person the first time. We confirm visa status before any payment, and if the dates do not fit we say so instead of selling.

Not yet, and we would rather say so than take your deposit. the remaining items have to be settled:, the ground arrangements for the October to December 2026 season, and the departure calendar. Until they are settled this route takes no orders and no deposits. What you can do today is tell us your dates and where you would fly from: we will check your Chengdu connection, tell you where each of the three stands, and write to you on the day the route opens.

Overview

China reaches most first-time visitors as a list. This plan gives it as a line. You begin in Sichuan on a waterworks built in the third century BC that is still watering the plain under your feet, and you finish eleven nights later on the Huangpu River, in a city looking at itself across the water. In between, the country arrives roughly in the order it happened: the first emperor's buried army, then the palace two dynasties ran from, then the port that turned into the skyline. Four high-speed trains do the moving, so no day of the twelve is spent in an airport. The order is the souvenir.

Sit a whole afternoon in a People's Park teahouse with a gaiwan that gets refilled as long as you stay: an afternoon is set aside for it, not squeezed between two stops, and nothing after it needs you.
Stand on a working weir from the third century BC and watch the river still being split the way it was designed to be: this is the sentence you will use at home when somebody says the words "ancient China".

Chengdu · Day 1 - Day 3

Day 1 · Land in the west

Your driver meets the flight, whatever time it lands. Starting in Chengdu buys you a first night that asks nothing of you.

Airport pickup Your driver and vehicle are waiting for the flight number on your confirmation, and the run into the city is yours to sleep through.

Chengdu through the window Elevated roads, then teahouse awnings and hotpot signs at street level. The first Chinese city you see is a city that eats late, which is convenient on the day your body clock is wrong.

Evening Nothing is scheduled. Your guide is reachable, and dinner near the hotel is recommended and booked for you if you want it, on your account.

Day 2 · Pandas, then nowhere to be

The morning does the thing everyone at home asked about. The afternoon does the thing nobody warned you about.

Chengdu panda base You are there in the morning, the hours the animals are generally moving: eating, climbing down off a platform, falling asleep again in the fork of a tree. Flat shaded paths and about three hours. Get to an enclosure early and wait rather than walk on: the animal comes to the fence on its own schedule, not on yours.

People's Park teahouse Bamboo chairs under the trees, a gaiwan each, the lidded cup China brews in, and a man with a long-spouted kettle who tops you up for as long as you keep the seat. At the next table, cards; two tables over, an ear cleaner working with a tuning fork. Half an hour in, you'll notice you have stopped planning the rest of the day.

Pace This is the light day of the twelve, on purpose, and it is placed on your second day, when your body clock is still wrong.

Day 3 · A machine that is still on duty

Out of the city by high-speed rail and back the same evening, bags left in your room. Today is where the trip's clock starts running.

Dujiangyan irrigation works You walk the levee between two flows of the same river, one sent to the fields and one left to the flood. Work began in the third century BC and the system is still doing the job. Your guide shows you the fish-mouth divide, then the spillway, then the neck cut through the rock, in that order, because the order is the argument. Standing on the divide with the water going both ways, you'll find the word "ancient" has stopped fitting.

Mount Qingcheng Taoist temple A quiet working temple rather than the crowded halls by the front gate. You sit down with a resident Taoist, your guide interpreting, and then take a first tai chi lesson in the courtyard: weight into one leg, then the other, slower than feels natural.

Back to Chengdu The evening train back, and the same hotel room. Three nights in Chengdu means the bags are opened once.

Xi'an · Day 4 - Day 6

Day 4 · Lanes, a painted face, then the mountains

A last Chengdu morning at street level, and an afternoon train that changes the climate outside the window.

Kuanzhai Alley and Taikoo Li Three parallel lanes of restored courtyard frontage, busy and commercial, which is what they are; a short walk away, Taikoo Li puts the same city's present tense next to it. Stand where the two meet and take the photograph: it is the whole trip's argument in one frame.

Community Sichuan opera A neighborhood house, backstage before the doors open, and then face-changing from three rows back. The mask goes from one painted face to another in the time it takes the performer to turn his head, and you will not catch it. Watch his left hand, not his face; you still will not catch it.

Rail to Xi'an The afternoon train runs north through the Qinling range, the mountain wall that divides the south of China from the north. Tunnel, then valley, then tunnel; when the window clears for good, the green has gone out of the landscape and you are in the dry country the empire started in.

Day 5 · Eight thousand faces

One site, one day, no filler around it. The point is not that they are old; the point is that they are individuals.

The Terracotta Warriors Your guide teaches you to read them before you go in: armor for rank, hair knots for role, the general standing where the general stands, crossbowmen at the front. Then you go up to the rail of the main pit and the estimated eight thousand of them are standing in formation below you, in the ground where they were found rather than in cases.

The newer pits In the more recently worked areas, traces of the original paint are still on the figures. They were not gray. Stand close to the rail on the excavation side and look for the red and the green in the folds.

Pace Much of this day is spent standing, so the site is worked in two halves with a sit-down between them; the vehicle stays with you.

Day 6 · Above the traffic, then into the lanes

An hour of the trip where you choose the direction, and an evening where you choose the dinner.

The Xi'an City Wall by bicycle Up the ramp onto the top of the wall, where the surface is wide enough for two bicycles side by side, and out along the circuit with your guide. Old city on your right, new city on your left, both of them below you. Ten minutes along the parapet, you'll find yourself reading the city as a plan instead of a maze.

Bell and Drum Tower quarter The two towers that kept the city's time before clocks, standing in the middle of the traffic that now goes around them. Your guide takes the quarter on foot at dusk, when the lights on both towers come up.

The Muslim Quarter at night Lanes the city's Hui Muslim community has cooked and traded in for centuries: hand-pulled noodles thrown against the bench, whole spices in open sacks, lamb going onto skewers by the hundred. You buy stall by stall, on your own account, and your guide tells you which stall is worth the queue.

Beijing · Day 7 - Day 9

Day 7 · The pagoda, then the capital

A short morning on purpose, because the afternoon covers a thousand kilometers.

Giant Wild Goose Pagoda A brick pagoda raised to house the sutras a Tang-dynasty monk carried back from India, with the plaza and the quarter that grew around it since. An hour and a half, flat, and a clean end to the Xi'an chapter: this city was the end of the road that brought those texts here.

Rail to Beijing The afternoon train north across the plain, a run of about four and a half to six hours by timetable, city center to city center. Your guide sees you onto the train and a Beijing guide meets you at the far end. The seat class on your order is written into your quote.

Evening Nothing is scheduled after check-in. Dinner near the hotel is recommended and booked for you if you want it, on your account.

Day 8 · One axis, then the view back down it

The palace in the morning, the hill behind it at the end. The second half explains the first.

The Forbidden City In through the gates and along one line: the ceremonial halls where the court did its business, the living quarters behind them, the imperial garden at the end. Finished in 1420, lived in for five centuries. Stand in the middle of the main courtyard and look back at the gates you came through: they line up one inside another, all the way out to the street.

Pace The site is large and guests regularly say it wore them out, so the route stops at the seats we know about, and the garden at the end is not rushed.

Jingshan Park Out the north gate and up the hill built from the earth dug out of the moats, twenty minutes of steps to the pavilion. From the top the palace lies below you as a single object: golden roofs in ranks, and the axis running out of the frame in both directions through the city.

Day 9 · The wall, without the climb

A whole day for one place, because it is two hours out of the city and worth every minute of them.

Drive out to Mutianyu The run north takes a good part of the morning, which is why nothing else is on today. The vehicle stays with you all day.

Cable car up The climbing is done for you. You step off onto a restored stretch of wall with watchtowers running away along the ridge in both directions, and your guide reads it: beacon towers in line of sight of each other, the pass below, and why the wall goes where it goes rather than along the easy ground. Up here you'll catch yourself lowering your voice, the way people do indoors.

Walk the towers The restored section links a run of towers, and you walk as far along it as you want to. Look back along the ridge with the towers stepping down it one behind another: that is the fifteen seconds worth filming.

Shanghai · Day 10 - Day 12

Day 10 · Heaven, the square, and a train east

An early start on purpose: three places in Beijing, then the afternoon on the rails.

Tian'anmen Square You cross the ceremonial center of modern China on foot, early, before the day builds. Everyone is screened to enter and the queue gets its own allowance in the day's plan; your guide takes the party to the nearest screening entrance.

Temple of Heaven Three structures on one line, where the emperor came once a year to account for the harvest. Round for heaven, square for earth, and the same grammar repeated at every scale from the altar to the railings. Come off the axis into the park for five minutes: the city uses this place every morning, and there will be someone singing.

National Museum of China Two hours on the east side of the square, and the objects behind the last nine days end up in one building: bronzes, ceramics, Buddhist figures, calligraphy. It is placed here on purpose, as the summary before you leave the north.

Rail to Shanghai The afternoon train east, city center to city center, about four and a half to six hours by timetable. The day's start time and the screening allowance for your departure are written into your quote before you are asked for a deposit.

Day 11 · The garden, the collection, the water

Shanghai in the order it was built: the old city first, then the river after dark.

Yu Garden and the old city Pavilions, rockery, ponds and a path that never runs straight, dropped inside the oldest quarter of the city. Two hours, flat. Take the rockery path and let it turn you around twice: it is designed to make a small garden feel like a walk.

Shanghai Museum Two hours with the bronzes, the ceramics and the painting. Pick one material and follow it through the halls: the same country you have been walking for ten days, told through one substance at a time.

The Bund after dark The stone banking houses on one bank, the towers of Pudong on the other, a hundred years apart and looking straight at each other across the water. Your guide is with you all evening.

Day 12 · Plane trees, then the ferry

The loosest morning of the twelve, then the airport. Nothing on this last day has a gate or a queue.

Former French Concession and Wukang Road Plane trees over the street, walled houses from the concession decades, small shops in their ground floors. You walk at street speed with your guide and stop when something is worth stopping for.

Huangpu River ferry The crossing the city takes to work. A few minutes at the rail among commuters and their scooters, on the same water the Bund was built to face, and then the far bank arrives.

Airport drop-off Your driver takes you to the airport with room in the timing rather than to the minute. When an early flight leaves no room for both of this morning's stops, your written quote says which one comes out and prices your order that way, before any deposit is taken.

A few things on this route follow the calendar, the season or a supplier's confirmation. Here they are, told straight.

Bookings are not open yet — the remaining items have to be settled first. One, Two, the ground arrangements for the October to December 2026 season, which include hotel allocation, guides and vehicles, rail ticketing and the three timed museum reservations. Three, the departure calendar. Until those items are settled we take no orders and no deposits. Tell us your dates and we will write to you on the day the route opens.
Three timed reservations — the Forbidden City, the National Museum of China and the Shanghai Museum each need a timed reservation, and their booking systems sit poorly with overseas mobile numbers. Who books each one for your order, and by when, is stated in writing in your quote. The admissions themselves are in the base price either way.
Site shuttles and mountain transport — named one by one so that nothing is read in by implication. The Terracotta Warriors site shuttle, the panda base internal shuttle, the Dujiangyan site shuttle, and the Mount Qingcheng cableway and lake boat are each confirmed for your month and stated in writing in your quote: whether it is running, and whether it sits inside your price. The only ascent transport already inside the base price on this route is the cable car or chairlift at Mutianyu.
The Great Wall ascent in November and December 11 — the ascent at Mutianyu is by cableway and open chairlift, and snow or ice closes them. We do not yet hold the operating rules for those two months. Quotes in November and December state the ascent arrangement for your departure in writing before you pay.
The city wall in November and December 11 — the wall-top cycling is the longest unsheltered outdoor stretch on this route. The arrangement for it in those two months is written into your quote.
Departure dates — no departures between October 1 and October 7, the national holiday week: the Terracotta Warriors site runs at its heaviest load that week and all four cities sit inside their no-go window. Dates are also set so that day eight never falls on a Monday, when the Forbidden City closes; if your dates would put it there, days eight and nine swap and the Great Wall moves to day eight.
The day ten start — day ten holds Tian'anmen Square, the Temple of Heaven and the National Museum of China, and then the afternoon train to Shanghai. Entry to the square runs through security screening. The start time for the day and the allowance for the screening queue are written into your quote for your departure.
The departure morning — the former French Concession walk and the Huangpu River ferry sit on the morning of day twelve, before the airport. We check them against your departure flight at quoting. If an early flight leaves no room for both, the written quote says which one comes out and prices your order that way, before any deposit is taken.
Reaching Chengdu — Shanghai on the way out has nonstop service from all our source markets; Chengdu on the way in does not. Direct service into Chengdu is full from the UK, from France, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, from Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece, and from Australia and New Zealand. From Nordic countries, Central Europe and Ireland, from the US and from Canada it is thin: one point each, at Vienna, Los Angeles and Vancouver. If you do not start at one of those, you reach Chengdu on a connecting itinerary, which is an international flight and sits outside the base price, as does any hub-city night it forces. We check your full inbound itinerary and state the connection in writing before your order is taken.
Visa window — the 30-day visa-free policy currently runs through December 31, 2026. Because this is a 12-day plan, departures on or before December 20, 2026 finish inside that window; later departures are quoted only after the official renewal is announced.
US passports — the US is not on the 30-day visa-free list, and 12 days is longer than the ten-day visa-free transit policy allows, so every US guest on this route holds a Chinese tourist or business visa, tourist or business, including ten-year multiple-entry. First-time applicants attend a consulate appointment in person, so allow processing time before your departure date. We confirm visa status before any payment. Guests already in China on the ten-day transit policy cannot take this trip, and we say so rather than work around it.
Confirmation and changes — the confirmation-time commitment and the change and refund terms are being finalized with our ground partners. Until they are settled, each quote states in writing its own confirmation deadline and its change and refund conditions. This route holds four rail movements and three timed reservations, so a date change touches rail inventory and reservation inventory at once.
