Four days in one city. Is there enough in Xi'an?

Four days is what it takes to stop treating Xi'an as one museum stop. The warriors get a whole morning and their own round trip. The wall gets an afternoon on top of it. The last morning goes to a pagoda courtyard and an hour of pulse and herbs. In between, two half-days are left open on purpose, and you sleep in the same room for three nights with no stations in your week.

Everyone says the warriors are packed. How bad is it?

It is a busy site and we do not pretend otherwise: it is one of the most visited sites in Shaanxi and the pits are indoor halls with fixed viewing rails. What we do is give it the morning rather than the middle of the day, keep nothing else on the schedule beside it, and let your guide work the pits in the order that thins out first. What we cannot promise is a quiet hall on a peak date. October 1 to 7 is the national holiday week, and for those dates your quote states the crowd situation in writing before you decide. Even on a full day, the rail is long and the ranks are readable: you will get your faces.

I haven't ridden a bike in years. Is the wall ride hard?

No. The wall top is flat, paved and wide enough to ride two abreast, with no traffic on it. You set the pace and stop where you like. If you would rather not ride at all, or the day is wet, you walk a stretch of the same wall top instead and the price is identical. Nobody has to get on a bicycle to get the view.

The Chinese medicine hour, is that a sales pitch?

No, and it is written into the plan that way. The hour is an introduction: your pulse is read, the drawers of the herb cabinet are opened and named, and you get the seasonal logic behind a prescription. That session is in your price. A physical treatment is offered afterwards, which you take or leave on the spot and pay the venue for only if you take it. No product purchase is part of the visit, and taking part never requires a treatment.

How do I actually get to Xi'an, and do I need a visa?

Almost everyone connects. Xi'an has few nonstop long-haul flights, so most guests fly into Beijing or Shanghai and take a domestic leg on their own international ticket. Xi'an, Layer by Layer

Overview

Xi'an is an old imperial capital that is now an ordinary working city, and both of those are true on the same street. What is left of it sits in layers, so these four days take the layers in order. Day two goes underground, to an army made for one man's afterlife. Day three goes up on top of the city wall, where the old rectangle still holds the modern city inside it. Day four comes back down to street level: a pagoda courtyard in the morning, then a herb cabinet and a pulse read. One city, three nights, one hotel, no stations, nothing packed twice. You'll go home with a sense of scale you did not have on the way out.

Xi'an · Day 1 - Day 4

Day 1 · Land, and let it be evening

You arrive and nothing is scheduled. Xi'an starts underground tomorrow morning.

Airport pickup Your driver meets your flight and takes you into town. Most arrivals here come off a connection through Beijing or Shanghai, so the day is built to absorb a late one.

The rest of the day Yours. Sleep, or walk the blocks around the hotel until the flight lets go of you. Your guide joins you tomorrow morning.

Day 2 · Eight thousand faces

A morning underground with the burial army, then lunch in the wheat country above it. Learn to read a face before you photograph one.

Terracotta Warriors You drive out of the city after breakfast and walk the pits from the rail. An estimated eight thousand figures stand in the corridors where they were found, and the ranks come apart as you look: armor tells you one thing, the tie of the hair another, generals from crossbowmen from foot soldiers. In the newer excavation areas, traces of the paint they were finished in still survive. Somewhere along the rail you'll stop taking photographs and start looking at faces.

Shaanxi noodle lunch Lunch after the pits, in the wheat country the emperor chose to be buried in. Shaanxi eats noodles rather than rice, and your guide orders and explains what lands on the table. See Special Notes for how this lunch is priced.

Back into town The afternoon and evening are unscheduled on purpose, because the morning is long. Your guide books dinner if you want it, on your account.

Day 3 · Up on the rectangle

The wall by day and the towers by night, both at street level of a city that never moved. Yesterday you were under the city. Today you are on top of its outline.

Xi'an City Wall You go up by a stone ramp and the town splits in two: gray lanes and low roofs on the inside, glass and traffic on the outside, one rectangle holding both. The top is wide enough to ride two abreast, and the bicycles are waiting at the gate. Ride the stretch between the corner towers at whatever speed the light asks for.

The rest of the afternoon Unscheduled. The wall is the day's one physical stretch and the plan leaves room after it.

Bell and Drum Towers After dark you walk the crossing point of the old street grid with your guide. The two towers are lit from below, and the eating streets run off them: grills, noodle counters, queues at the good windows. Your guide reads the shopfronts and you decide what to try. Halfway down the street you'll notice you have stopped checking the time.

Day 4 · Street level, then the airport

A pagoda courtyard and an hour of pulse and herbs before the flight. The last thing this city shows you is the part of it still in daily use.

Giant Wild Goose Pagoda The morning starts in the pagoda grounds, brick above and the cultural area open around the base. It is flat, open and slow, which is the point of putting it here rather than at the start.

Chinese medicine introduction An hour with a practitioner. Three fingers go on your wrist, the wall of small drawers is opened and named, and you get the seasonal logic behind it: the same person is not prescribed the same thing in October as in July. The introduction is where this visit ends unless you choose otherwise, and nothing is sold to you. You'll catch yourself sitting up straighter while your pulse is read, the way you do when someone is actually paying attention.

Airport drop-off Your driver takes you out with time to spare. This morning is checked against your departure time when we quote, so the plan you receive already fits the flight you are on.

The day two lunch — the Shaanxi noodle lunch is arranged for you either way. How it is priced is still being settled with our ground partners, so your written quote states in plain words whether that lunch sits inside your base price or goes on your own account. You see that before you pay anything.
Group — Private, just your party. From 1 guest. No fixed maximum party size.
National holiday week — October 1 to 7 is the national holiday week and the warriors' site runs at its busiest of the year. Whether this route runs departures that week is under commercial review; for dates in that week, your written quote states the crowd situation before you decide.
Riding the wall — the bicycle is in your price and so is the alternative. On a wet day, or if you would rather walk, you take a stretch of the same wall top on foot and the price does not move.
The medicine visit — the introduction session is in your price. The physical treatment offered afterwards is yours to take or leave and is charged by the venue if you take it. Taking part in the visit never requires a treatment, and no product purchase is part of it.
Departure morning — the pagoda and the medicine hour sit before the airport drop-off on day four. When we quote, we check both against your departure flight. If the flight is too early for both, your written quote states which one comes out and prices the trip on that basis, before any deposit is taken.
Getting to Xi'an — nonstop long-haul service into Xi'an is thin, and most guests connect through Beijing or Shanghai on their own international ticket. Tell us the connection you are holding and the four days are built around the arrival time it gives you.
Season — October to December in Xi'an is dry, clear and increasingly cold. The wall ride sits in the afternoon light rather than the early morning, and both the warriors' halls and the medicine room are indoors.
Hotels — named in your written confirmation; "or similar" always means the same class and comparable location, never a quiet downgrade.
