Why does a China trip start in Shenzhen? I have never heard of it.

Because the order is the point. Shenzhen is where China's electronics industry actually sits, and it looks nothing like it did forty years ago. Two days there gives you the country's newest version first, so that the Ming and Qing palace on day ten and the third-century-BC waterworks on day five land as answers rather than as scenery. If you would rather open on the Great Wall, say so and we will point you at a route that does; we would rather move you than talk you into an order you do not want.

Fourteen days, five cities, one flight and three trains. Is that too much moving?

The moving is concentrated so the staying is not interrupted. Chengdu, Xi'an and Beijing are three nights each in one hotel, which is nine of your thirteen nights with the suitcase shut. Each transfer sits in an afternoon with a sight in the morning before it and nothing after it, and your own vehicle runs hotel to station or airport at both ends of every leg. The one domestic flight is on day three, early enough that jet lag is doing the work anyway.

How do we get up the Great Wall in November?

At Mutianyu the ways up are a cable car, an open chairlift and a toboggan down, and all three run to their own fourth-quarter timetables set by the scenic-area operator, not by us. So none of them is inside your price and none of them is promised here. What is inside your price is the scenic-area ticket, the full-day private vehicle from central Beijing and back, and your guide for the whole day; and before you pay, your quote states in writing which uphill and downhill arrangement applies to your departure date. Whatever the answer, you get a restored stretch of wall with the watchtowers you can walk between, and a whole day with nothing else on it.

Can I book this today?

Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. the remaining items have to be settled first: the four intercity legs booked against the real fourth-quarter timetable with cabin and seat class named, a written answer from our ground partners on the three fourth-quarter outdoor items, the national holiday week decision, Until those items are done we take no orders and no deposits. What you can do now is send us your dates and where you would fly from: we will tell you what is settled, what is not, and write to you on the day the route opens.

Do we need a visa, and can we fly from the US?

Most guests on this route do not need a visa: French, German, Dutch, Belgian, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek, UK, Nordic, Central European, Irish, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passports enter visa-free for stays days, and we check your 14 days plus any extra days in China against that window before you pay. The current policy runs through December 31, 2026, so departures on or before December 18, 2026 finish inside it. The US is different, and the answer there is no: this route is not sold to United States guests, because Shenzhen has no direct service from the United States and 14 days is longer than the 10-day transit policy allows. Write to us anyway and we will send you a route that does work from a US departure.

Overview

Most China plans open at the Great Wall and work forward. This one runs the other way. You land in Shenzhen, a city that did not look like this forty years ago, and then walk backwards: Chengdu's slow afternoons, a waterworks from the third century BC that still moves water, Tang-dynasty Xi'an, the Ming and Qing palace in Beijing. Shanghai puts you back into today at the end. Three nights each in the three middle cities, so you unpack once per city. The order is the argument: by the time you reach the oldest thing on the route, you already know what it was for. You'll notice somewhere around Xi'an that you have stopped calling any of it old.

Shenzhen · Day 1 - Day 2

Day 1 · Land in a forty-year-old city

Your driver meets your flight, whatever time it lands. Nothing is asked of you today.

Airport pickup Your driver and vehicle are waiting for the flight number on your confirmation, and the run into the city is yours to sleep through.

Shenzhen through the window Towers, then more towers, then a road built wider than the traffic on it. This is the city that opens the trip, and almost none of what you are looking at is older than your driver.

Evening Nothing is scheduled. Your guide is reachable, and dinner near the hotel is recommended and booked for you if you want it, at your own expense.

Day 2 · Six floors of how things get made

The market first, because everything after this is older. Understand the newest thing in China on the day you have the least context for it.

Huaqiangbei electronics market You walk up through the floors with your guide, and the order of them is the lesson: loose components in trays at the bottom, prototype boards above, finished machines near the top. Stand at a stall counter while a buyer and a seller settle a bulk order in front of you, neither of them in any hurry, and look at the trays: the parts inside the thing you are holding right now are almost certainly on this floor.

What you buy Anything you pick up on the floors is on your own account. Your guide tells you what a fair price looks like and we take no commission on any of it.

Pace The market is the day's one substantial thing. The afternoon stays loose on purpose, because you flew a long way yesterday.

Chengdu · Day 3 - Day 5

Day 3 · The city explains itself, then you leave

One exhibition in the morning, one flight after lunch. The last modern day for a while.

Shenzhen urban planning exhibition The exhibition the city keeps about its own planning and growth, and the cheapest possible way to hold forty years in your head before you go looking for six hundred. Your guide walks you through it and connects it back to yesterday's market floors.

Fly to Chengdu The afternoon flight is arranged and included in your base price, with your own vehicle running from hotel to airport at this end and from airport to hotel at the other. The cabin class for your booking is specified in your quote.

Arrive in Chengdu Nothing is scheduled after the flight. Three nights in one hotel start tonight, so the suitcase opens once.

Day 4 · Pandas early, then an afternoon with no next

Be at the panda base at the hour the pandas are awake. Then stop moving for the rest of the day.

Chengdu Panda Base The morning slot is the whole point: the pandas are generally more active early, and by late morning most of them are asleep in the same position. Flat shaded paths, about three hours, and your guide keeps to the enclosures where something is actually happening.

Teahouse sitting in People's Park A bamboo chair under the trees and one gaiwan (the lidded cup China brews in), refilled as long as you sit there. The next table is playing cards, the ear cleaner works down the row with his tuning fork, and nobody is going anywhere. Your seat and the refills are arranged; the ear cleaning and the massage stalls are yours to take or leave. Some time in the second hour you'll realise you have stopped checking how long this is supposed to take.

Pace This is the light day of the Chengdu block, and it is light on purpose. The afternoon has no second half planned for it.

Day 5 · A machine from the third century BC, still running

Out of Chengdu for the day and back the same evening. This is the day the route's argument arrives.

Dujiangyan irrigation system You stand on the dividing levee with the river coming at you and splitting around it: one channel to the plain, one to carry the flood away, no dam anywhere in the design. Built in the third century BC, and the fields behind you have been watered by it ever since. Your guide walks you through the three parts in order so the mechanism is legible on the ground rather than on a diagram.

Mount Qingcheng The mountain above the waterworks, one of the principal Taoist mountains in China and still a working religious site. You walk up through the temple buildings under the trees, and the sound level drops the higher you go.

A conversation with a resident priest You sit down with a Taoist priest who lives on the mountain, with your guide translating, and you can ask him what he actually does between morning and night. A tai chi session is part of the visit; whether it runs outdoors or indoors on your date is written into your quote.

Back to Chengdu The return transport is included and you sleep in the same Chengdu hotel tonight, so nothing gets packed.

Xi'an · Day 6 - Day 8

Day 6 · Two sides of one street, then the train

A morning on the most restored street in Chengdu, an afternoon crossing to the Tang dynasty by rail.

Kuanzhai Alley and Taikoo Li Three parallel lanes of restored courtyard frontage on one side, a new retail district built into the same grid on the other. It is busy and it is polished, and that is the point your guide makes with it: this is a Chinese city deciding, street by street, what to keep and what to rebuild. Stand where the old lane meets the new block and look both ways down the same line of paving.

High-speed rail to Xi'an The afternoon train runs north through the mountains out of the Sichuan basin, tunnel after tunnel, and it is a good three hours to sit still after two weeks of nothing but sitting still is not yet a habit. Your seat class is written into your quote; your vehicle runs hotel to station and station to hotel at both ends.

Arrive in Xi'an Three nights in one hotel again. Nothing is scheduled tonight.

Day 7 · Eight thousand faces, none of them repeated

One site, one day, no second stop. Learn to read rank off a stranger who has been standing there for twenty-two centuries.

The Terracotta Warriors You come in above Pit One and the formation runs away from you down the length of the hall, an estimated eight thousand figures in all three pits. Your guide gives you the reading key first: armour plates, topknot position, the stance of the hands. After that the ranks separate on their own, and the generals stop being a caption and start being findable.

The newer pits In the more recently excavated areas some of the original pigment survives on the figures, which is the closest you get to seeing them the way they were buried.

Crowds This is one of the busiest sites in the country and we plan the day around the hours the pits are least crowded rather than around the coach schedule.

Day 8 · Up on the wall, then down into the noise

The whole old town from above in the afternoon, the same town from inside it after dark.

Xi'an City Wall You go up the ramp and the top of the wall opens out flat and wide, running away from you around the entire old town. Look inward from the parapet: the street grid below still follows the Tang-dynasty plan, and the modern city has simply filled it in. Your wall-top access is included and your guide picks the gate with the view you want.

On the wall Bicycles are the usual way people cover the circuit, and bicycle hire is not included in your price. Whether bicycles are available for hire on your date is stated in your quote, and walking a section with your guide is the standard alternative either way.

Bell and Drum Towers quarter after dark The two towers once kept the city's time and opened and closed its gates; the streets beneath them now belong to the food stalls. You walk the quarter with your guide at the hour it fills up, and the stalls are yours to try, with your guide naming each thing before you commit to it.

Beijing · Day 9 - Day 11

Day 9 · A brick box for the books, then east

One pagoda in the morning, five hundred miles of plain in the afternoon.

Big Wild Goose Pagoda The pagoda went up to hold the sutras a Tang-dynasty monk carried back from India, and it is still the plainest thing in a quarter that has grown ornate around it. Stand at the base and look straight up the brick tiers: no decoration, no colour, just seven stories of storage for the books that changed what this country believed. Entry to the grounds and the cultural area is included; climbing the pagoda is a separate ticket and is not.

High-speed rail to Beijing The afternoon train crosses the North China plain at speed, flat land and winter wheat and power lines all the way. Your seat class is written into your quote, and your vehicle runs hotel to station and station to hotel at both ends.

Arrive in Beijing Three nights in one hotel. Nothing is scheduled tonight, which matters, because tomorrow is the long one.

Day 10 · One axis, six hundred years

Walk the palace in a single line, then climb the hill that shows you the line.

The Forbidden City Your timed slot is booked ahead on a mainland number, so you go in on schedule. Inside you walk one axis: the ceremonial halls where the court did its business, the living quarters behind them, the imperial garden at the end, out through the north gate. Stand in the middle of the main courtyard and look back through the gates you came in by, one inside another, all the way out to the square.

Pace The palace is large and guests regularly say so, which is why the route is cut to that single line with places to sit, and why this day is never set on a Monday, when it closes.

Jingshan Park Straight out of the north gate and up the hill made from the earth dug out of the moats. Twenty minutes of steps, and from the pavilion at the top the whole palace lies below you as one line of golden roofs running north to south through the middle of Beijing. This is where the morning turns from a lot of courtyards into a plan.

Day 11 · The wall, and nothing else

A long drive out, a long stretch of wall, a long drive back. Today has only one thing in it on purpose.

Drive out to Mutianyu The drive north out of Beijing takes a good part of the morning, and the private vehicle stays with you for the whole day. This is why nothing else is scheduled: adding a second heavy activity to this day would mean rushing the Wall.

Up to the wall The arrangements for getting up and down within the scenic area are included in your quote, as the cable car, the open chairlift and the toboggan run operate on their own fourth-quarter timetables and none of them is included in your price. What is included in your price is the ticket, the full-day vehicle and your guide.

Along the ridge You come out onto a restored stretch with watchtowers stepping away along the ridge in both directions. Your guide reads the wall to you: beacon towers, the pass below, why the sightlines run where they run. Stand in a tower doorway and look along the ridge with the towers going smaller: that is the photograph, and it is the same one from the fourth tower as from the first. Up here you'll find yourself talking more quietly than you were an hour ago.

Shanghai · Day 12 - Day 14

Day 12 · Round for heaven, square for earth, then south

Two Beijing mornings' worth of things in one morning, on purpose, because the train leaves after lunch.

Temple of Heaven Three structures on one line, and the shapes carry the argument: round belongs to heaven, square belongs to earth. The emperor came here once a year to account for the harvest, and the park around it now opens early and fills with people exercising, which is the version of it you will actually walk into.

National Museum of China Your reservation is held for a morning slot, booked by us on a mainland number, so the afternoon train is never at risk. Bronzes, ceramics, Buddhist sculpture, calligraphy. Coming here on day twelve rather than day one is the point of the whole running order: you have already stood in front of most of what the cases are about.

High-speed rail to Shanghai The afternoon train south, your seat class written into your quote, your vehicle running hotel to station and station to hotel at both ends.

Day 13 · Back to today

A garden older than the city around it, a museum that closes the loops, and a river with both answers on it.

Yu Garden and the old city Pavilions, rockeries, ponds and paths that double back on themselves, in the oldest quarter of Shanghai. This is the part of the city that existed before the treaty port arrived, and after two weeks of imperial scale, it is a relief to be somewhere built for one family.

Shanghai Museum Arranged by material rather than by dynasty, which is why an hour here ties the route together: the bronze gallery holds the same century you walked through in Xi'an, and the ceramics run right up to the buildings outside the window. Your reservation is booked by us on a mainland number.

The Bund and the Pudong skyline You walk the riverside after dark with your guide beside you the whole evening: the old bank buildings behind you, the Pudong towers lit across the water. Fourteen days ago you started in a city forty years old and did not know what to make of it. Now you are looking at the same argument across half a mile of river, and you know which bank came first. Standing here you'll feel the whole route close, in the order it was built to close.

Evening safety Your guide stays with you on the waterfront all evening. Strangers who approach visitors on the Bund with an invitation to practise English or to see a tea ceremony are running a known scam, and your guide will steer you past it without a scene.

Day 14 · Plane trees, then the airport

The last morning has nothing you have to see in it. That is the design.

Former French Concession and Wukang Road Plane trees over low historic housing, small independent shops, laundry on a balcony above a coffee counter. You walk it slowly with your guide and stop wherever you want, which after thirteen days of timed reservations is the whole point of the last morning.

Airport drop-off Your driver runs you to the airport with margin built in for your flight time. If your flight is late in the day and the afternoon opens up, tell us and we arrange that gap around your check-out time rather than to a schedule.

Three outdoor items in the fourth quarter — at Mutianyu, the ticket and the full-day vehicle are included in your price, while the cable car, the open chairlift and the toboggan are not included and are not guaranteed. On the Xi'an City Wall, wall-top access is included in your price, while bicycle hire is not, and walking a section is the standard alternative. On Mount Qingcheng, the mountain ticket and the conversation with the resident priest are included in your price, while whether the tai chi session takes place outdoors or indoors is not fixed in advance. In all three cases, the arrangement for your departure date is stated in writing in your quote before you pay.
A self-drive taxi ride on day two — a ride on a live commercial route is booked for day two and its cost sits inside your base price. We do not present it as a highlight of this trip, because its availability is not ours to promise: the operator can suspend service on the day and we would learn of it when you do. We book it against your dated itinerary in advance and re-check within 24 hours of your arrival in China. If it is not running, day two gets additional time in Huaqiangbei, or the Shenzhen urban planning exhibition moves up from day three. Both are already in your inclusions, so nothing that was named to you is lost, and no refund or surcharge arises.
Departure dates — no departures between October 1 and October 7, the national holiday week, until the holiday-week plan and advance ticketing are settled. Saturday departures are not accepted either, because day ten would then fall on a Monday, when the Forbidden City closes; if you are set on a Saturday departure, day ten and day eleven swap places.
Museum closing days — the Forbidden City closes on Mondays and the itinerary is built around that. For the National Museum of China, the Shanghai Museum and Temple of Heaven we check the closing days against each institution's own published calendar when your departure date is set, rather than assuming them here.
Timed reservations — the Forbidden City, the National Museum of China and the Shanghai Museum all require a timed reservation, and the booking systems are difficult on a non-mainland phone number. We book all three on a mainland number using the details from your confirmation.
Getting to Shenzhen — France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece have direct services into Shenzhen. The UK, the Nordic countries, Central Europe, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not, or have only limited services, so guests from those markets reach Shenzhen on a connecting itinerary through a third city, arranged and paid for by the guest. We check that arrival time against day one before we confirm anything.
Visa window — the 30-day visa-free policy currently runs through December 31, 2026. Because this is a 14-day plan, departures on or before December 18, 2026 finish inside that window; later departure dates are quoted only after the official renewal is announced.
Not sold to United States guests — two reasons, each sufficient on its own. Shenzhen has no direct service from the United States, so a US guest cannot reach this route's entry port without a connection we do not sell; and the US is not on the 30-day visa-free list, while 14 days is longer than the 10-day visa-free transit policy allows. A US enquiry is answered with an alternative route, not with a workaround on this one. Guests who entered China under the 10-day transit policy cannot take this trip either, for the same length reason, and we say so before payment.

The five cities come apart cleanly. Beijing, Xi'an and Chengdu each stand on their own, the Shenzhen opening can go, and the Dujiangyan day return is the first thing we would cut rather than compress. Tell us your dates and who is coming, and we cut days rather than cut the pace.
