Guangzhou's old and new faces in a single day
This route lays Guangzhou out as the two faces of a single day. In the morning you set off from Zhujiang New Town, stroll across Huacheng Square, take in the lines of the Guangzhou Library and the Guangzhou Opera House, then walk the riverside promenade beneath the Canton Tower. Midday is the heart of the day: change into hanfu provided by the restaurant and sit down to an imperial banquet. Imperial Golden Shrimp, the Tang Palace Hibiscus Feast and Dragon-and-Phoenix Soup arrive course by course, silk-and-bamboo music and classical song and dance accompany the meal, and a cup of clear tea closes it. In the afternoon you walk into Huangpu Ancient Port, following bluestone lanes past wok-ear gables and grey-blue brick, revisit the era of single-port trade at the Yuehai First Customs Memorial Hall, wander the old village's ancestral halls, and finish with authentic local snacks. What you carry away is a sense of continuity: Guangzhou, from thousand-year-old trading port to modern metropolis.

Why Huangpu Ancient Port and the imperial banquet share one day
- Huangpu Ancient Port's significance is held in one phrase: ‘single-port trade’. From the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty, Guangzhou was the only port in China open to trade with Europe and America. Foreign merchant ships anchored here, had their holds inspected and paid their duties, and the artefacts and models in the Yuehai First Customs Memorial Hall reconstruct exactly that era of trade.
- The old village's wok-ear gables, grey-blue brick, dark tiles and ancestral halls are what Lingnan clan culture looks like day to day. Walk into the lanes today and you will still find elders talking under the banyan trees and children chasing each other over the flagstones. The old port has never been turned into a stage set, and its everyday life has never stopped.
- The imperial banquet turns eating into a ritual: hanfu, imperial dishes, silk-and-bamboo music with song and dance. It is not a scholarly reconstruction of any one dynasty's imperial kitchen; it uses Lingnan ingredients and Cantonese technique to recreate the elegance of an ancient feast. Golden shrimp, the Hibiscus Feast, Dragon-and-Phoenix Soup: the flavours are Cantonese, the ceremony is old-world.

The moment the hanfu went on, lunch became the main event. I still remember the golden shrimp and the Dragon-and-Phoenix Soup; it was my first time eating to silk-and-bamboo music.
Zhujiang New Town is great for photos in the morning, and the old port was just right for an afternoon with the kids. We didn't have to drive or look up a single route all day.
I assumed the imperial banquet was a gimmick. Then we sat down, no one rushed us, and there was clear tea after the meal. It was the most unhurried meal of my whole trip.
The Yuehai First Customs Memorial Hall held my attention more than I expected. Seeing the single-port trade story first and then the ancestral halls was exactly the right order.
Travelling with my parents, hotel pick-up mattered most. A seat for each of us, no hassle.
