A 10-day, 9-night food journey through Guangdong, Teochew and Fujian

Taste your way through Guangdong, Teochew and Fujian in one trip. Ten days and nine nights from Guangzhou through Shantou, Jieyang, Teochew, Quanzhou, Anxi and Nanjing, ending with a crossing to Kinmen: roots, flavours, and the way home.

- Easy to moderate: mostly old town and village walking, with no climbs — Two to four hours of walking a day, with stone paving and raised thresholds; day nine on Kinmen is a full day with a fixed return ferry.

## Overview

Day one you arrive in Guangzhou, where your driver meets you and takes you to the hotel, with the evening free. Day two a high-speed train carries you south to Shantou: the arcade streets of Shantou Small Park and Laomagong Temple, then the Qiaopi Museum, where the letters and remittances sent home by overseas Chinese carry the story of those who left for Southeast Asia, and an evening on Longyan South Road. Day three opens with Cantonese morning tea at a thirty-year-old restaurant, then Chang'anli in Nigou Village and De'anli, a rare mansion-style village complex, and the Jieyang Confucian Temple and City God Temple in the afternoon. Day four takes in Guangji Bridge, one of China's four great ancient bridges, a Teochew braised goose feast, Han Wengong Temple, a Yingge dance performance, Paifang Street with red peach rice cake making, and the ancient city light show at night. Day five crosses into Fujian for Wulin Traditional Village, ginger duck at lunch and the seaside Luojia Temple. Day six brings the floral hairpin photo experience at Xunpu Village, Quanzhou Ancient City, and Nanyin music with a puppet show. Day seven starts at Guandi Temple, then Anxi, the home of Chinese oolong: Qingshuiyan Temple, the state-owned tea factory and a tea tasting. Day eight goes to the UNESCO-listed Nanjing Tulou for a Hakka home-style meal and Yunshuiyao Ancient Town. Day nine is a ferry across to Kinmen Island. Day ten a private car takes you to the airport or station at the right time, ending the journey with warm memories of home.

- Press a tray of red peach rice cakes by hand (Teochew): Red peach rice cakes are the pastry Teochew families put out for ancestral rites and festivals, shaped like a peach for good fortune. Working with the shop's cook, you knead the red-yeast dough, fill it with savoury glutinous rice, press it into a carved peach-shaped mould, turn it out and steam it. The whole thing takes about an hour and you take yours away with you. The shop sits under the arcades of Paifang Street, so you can carry straight on down the street afterwards.

- The floral hairpin of Xunpu Village (Quanzhou): The simpua wei is how women in this fishing village have worn their hair for generations. It is not a show put on for visitors; the women wearing it today were going to wear it anyway. You change into local dress, an aunt coils fresh flowers into your hair, and you are photographed in the lanes of the oyster-shell houses, whose walls are set with the giant shells once carried home as ballast on trading ships from the East African coast. Styling and photography take about two and a half hours.

- A tea tasting at the old tea factory (Quanzhou): Anxi is the home of Tieguanyin, and the old state-owned factory still runs, with wooden withering troughs and tumbling machines decades old. You follow the process from withering and tumbling through to roasting, then judge three cups against each other for aroma, liquor and spent leaf while the master shows you how to tell them apart. The orchid note in Tieguanyin is shaken into the leaf rather than added to it, which becomes obvious once you have watched it done. The next morning you can pick a basket yourself in the terraced gardens.

The three intercity segments are covered by high-speed rail, with everything else handled by private car — no long day trips back and forth. Daily walking stays within old towns and villages, averaging 2 to 4 hours, with no mountain hiking. If this still feels too rushed, let us know; we'll remove a destination rather than compress each day.

### Meals are not included in the quote. How are daily meals arranged?

Besides signature meals like braised goose banquet and Tulou private cuisine listed in the itinerary, all other meals will be recommended and booked by your guide based on your taste and location each day, with payment on the spot. ### We hold foreign passports — can we really visit Kinmen on the ninth day?

A Taiwan entry permit must be applied for in advance and cannot be processed on the day of travel. We will review your passport and travel documents before you confirm your itinerary and let you know how long the process takes. If time is too short or the situation does not apply, Day 9 will be changed to explore the old town, coastline, and markets of Xiamen's main island, with a corresponding adjustment to the cost—you won't arrive at the pier only to find you can't proceed.

### Will I definitely be able to see performances like Yingge Dance, Nanyin music, and puppet shows?

Yingge Dance showtimes follow the local schedule, with more performances during festivals and weekends; Nanyin and marionette shows are based on the theater's daily lineup. ### Teochew and Minnan dialects are hard to follow: will communication be a problem?

There is an English-speaking guide throughout, from the pickup in Guangzhou to the drop-off in Xiamen. The dialects are what local people speak among themselves and are not an obstacle for you; what does need someone to translate line by line are the fortune-stick verses, the opera and the dish names, and that is the guide's main work on this route.

### Is this route suitable for older parents or children?

Yes. There are no climbs and no altitude; the most demanding parts are old town paving and raised temple thresholds. The rice cake making, the floral hairpin session and the tea picking all involve children easily. With older parents, day nine can be spent entirely on Xiamen island and the late evening in Teochew on day four can finish earlier; tell us the ages in your group and we will bring the density down.
