## Overview

Most China plans for a family are built for the fittest person in the party, then quietly ask the oldest one to keep up. This one is built the other way around. Four cities, three internal flights, and two whole days given to travel and nothing else. In Beijing the Great Wall is reached by cable car and left by toboggan. In Chengdu an afternoon goes to a bamboo chair and a lidded cup. In Zhangjiajie an elevator runs up through the rock face, so the sandstone pillars arrive at eye level for everyone at once. Shanghai closes it with a garden, a river and a skyline. You'll notice, somewhere in the second week, that nobody in your party is being waited for.

##### Day 2: The palace, then a pair of shoes

- (sight) — Your timed slots are booked in advance, so you enter on schedule. You cross the ceremonial courtyards first, then the residential quarters where the court actually lived, and finish in the imperial garden at the north end. Stand on the axis and look back along the route you took: one gate behind another, all the way to where you started.
- (sight) — the vehicle waits at the north gate, so nobody walks the length of the palace twice. Benches and a sit-down break are built into the route.
- (sight) — an afternoon at a bench: layers of fabric glued into a sole, pressed, then stitched by hand while you try it on yourself. You'll watch the children go quiet over the stitching, which is not what anyone predicted this morning. What you finish comes home in your luggage.

##### Day 3: Up by cable car, down by chute

- (transport) — The drive north takes most of the morning, so today holds one thing only, and the guide's briefing happens in the vehicle rather than on the wall.
- (sight) — the cable car lifts you to the restored towers, and from there the wall runs level along the ridge. Walk between two watchtowers and stop at a parapet gap: mountains behind mountains, the wall drawing its line over every one of them.
- (dining) — a family-run place at the foot of the mountain, northern home cooking, dishes made from what is grown nearby. Your guide books the table; lunch is on your account.
- (sight) — a chute that curves down through the trees to the valley floor, ridden seated and at your own speed, which is how this route gets everyone off the wall without a descent on foot. Anyone who would rather not ride it is quoted an alternative way down before you book.

#### Chengdu (3 days)

- Subtitle: A day given to getting there
- Recommendation: Beijing to Chengdu, and nothing else on the page. Two days like this are why the mountain days can be full ones.

##### Day 5: Pandas early, tea all afternoon

- (sight) — You go in the morning session, when the pandas are generally more active. You walk the enclosures at whatever speed the slowest walker sets. Find a spot at the fence and stay there: a panda pulling a bamboo stalk sideways out of a pile, unhurried, is the fifteen seconds everybody films.
- (sight) — bamboo chairs, a gaiwan each, and the pot coming back as long as you stay. Cards at the next table, the ear-cleaner's tuning fork ringing down the aisle, the grandparents in the shade. You'll notice the afternoon has gone somewhere without anyone asking what's next.

##### Day 6: A market, a wok, a painted face

- (sight) — You walk a working local market with the cooking instructor before class, and the instructor stops in front of the chillies and the Sichuan pepper to explain what goes into what. Stand where the aisle turns and watch the buying happen at local speed.
- (sight) — aprons on, wok in front of you, home-style dishes rather than restaurant showpieces, with the instructor working along the line. The class is included in your price; lunch that day is booked by your guide, on your account.
- (sight) — a neighbourhood theatre in the afternoon, backstage first: costumes on their racks, the paint pots, an actor putting a face on in the mirror. Then face-changing, seen from close enough to lose track of how it is done.

#### Zhangjiajie (3 days)

- Recommendation: Chengdu to Zhangjiajie, one flight, no sightseeing. Arrive with the legs you'll need tomorrow.

##### Day 8: The lift inside the cliff

- (sight) — your entry is booked for the early session and the vehicle leaves the hotel accordingly, which is how a three-generation party gets to the lift before the queue builds.
- (sight) — a passenger lift running up inside the cliff face, both directions included in your price. No one in your party will need to climb anything to reach the top.

##### Day 9: The high terrace and the valley floor

- (sight) — the cable car lifts you to a terrace above the densest stand of pillars in the park. The name belongs to a Tujia chieftain who called himself "son of heaven"; the view from his terrace explains the title without anyone having to argue for it.
- (sight) — down on the valley floor a level path follows a clear stream under the cliffs, and your guide takes a section of it, one to three hours, cut to the party on the day. Wild macaques work this stream and will take food from an open hand, so nothing edible travels in the open here and children walk hand in hand with an adult; your guide says it out loud at the gate too.
- (sight) — The day closes at a loom, where the pattern is counted rather than drawn. Watch the weaver's hands rather than the cloth: the counting is the whole thing.

#### Shanghai (3 days)

- Subtitle: Out of the mountains
- Recommendation: Zhangjiajie to Shanghai, the last of the three flight days. Legs up; the city can wait until tomorrow.

##### Day 11: Garden, river, skyline

- (sight) — pavilions, rockery, a pond and paths that never run straight, in the middle of the old town. Sit on the pond side for a while: still water, roof corners standing over it, and the noise of the old town staying outside the wall.
- (transport) — you board the commuter ferry with everyone else and cross at water level, a few minutes bank to bank, the old riverside falling behind and the towers coming up in front.
- (note) — the trading-era facades on one bank, the towers on the other, and the moment the lights come on. Your guide stays with you the whole evening here. You'll look along the rail and see all three generations of your family looking at the same thing, which has not happened in years.

##### Day 12: Home, with a pair of shoes in the bag

- Cloth-shoe workshop: an afternoon at a bench: layers of fabric pasted into a sole, pressed, then stitched by hand while you try it yourself. You'll watch the children get quiet over the stitching, which is not what anyone predicted this morning. What you finish comes home in your luggage.

### Day 3 — Up by cable car, down by chute

The Great Wall without the climb. Everyone in the party stands on the same wall today.

- Drive out to Mutianyu: The drive north takes most of the morning, so today holds only one thing, and the guide's briefing happens in the vehicle rather than on the wall.

- Bailong Elevator: a passenger lift running up inside the cliff face, both directions included in your price. Nobody in your party needs to climb anything to reach the top.
- Yuanjiajie: level paths link the clifftop viewpoints, minutes apart, with the sandstone pillar forest standing below and around you, the one the floating mountains of Avatar drew on. Walk out to the natural arch called the First Bridge under Heaven and look down through the gap between the stacks. You'll catch yourself lowering your voice up here, and so will everyone else.
- Down the same way: the lift takes you back down at the end of the afternoon, so the day ends the way it began, without stairs.

### Special Notes

A few things on this route are still being settled, and a few follow the season. Here they are, told straight.

- Rooms for three generations: parties like yours want rooms that open into each other. We are confirming a bookable connecting or family room type in each of the four cities, and until those types are named in your written confirmation this route takes no order and no deposit. We would rather hold the route than sell you a corridor between the grandparents and the children.
- Booking calendar: no departures during the national holiday week, October 1 to 8, when the queue for the Bailong Elevator runs to hours and a three-generation party pays for that in standing time. Day two never falls on a Monday, when the Forbidden City is closed; if your dates would put it there, days two and three swap.
- Winter operation in Zhangjiajie: the lifts and cable cars on this route run to a winter schedule with annual maintenance shutdowns, and the scenic area publishes it each season. We confirm December departures only after that announcement is in hand; until then the departure window we sell on this route is October 9 to December 20, 2026.
- Fog on the mountain: fog can close the Yuanjiajie viewpoints for a morning. When it does, days eight and nine swap on the ground. If both mountain days are fogged out, we arrange an evening light show at Tianmen Mountain at our cost as a fallback; it is never sold as part of this route.
- Monkeys along the Golden Whip Stream: Wild macaques live along the stream and will take food from an open hand. Nothing edible is carried in the open on that walk, and children walk hand in hand with an adult. Your guide says this out loud at the gate, and it is repeated in your confirmation.
- Shuttle buses inside Wulingyuan: The scenic area runs its own shuttle buses between the gates and the trailheads. ### VPN & Internet Access

- Badge: Do this before you fly
- What's blocked: Google, Gmail, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and most Western news sites are inaccessible in China without a VPN.
- Download before you leave: It's nearly impossible to download a VPN once inside China. Install and test at home. Recommended: Astrill (most reliable), Mullvad, ExpressVPN — subscribe to at least two in case one stops working.
- Hotel Wi-Fi tip: Some hotels block VPN connections on their Wi-Fi. Use your phone's mobile data as a hotspot if the VPN drops.
- Good news: WhatsApp works perfectly through a VPN, so your messaging stays unchanged. Apple iMessage and Signal also work.

### Paying in China

- China is cashless: Alipay and WeChat Pay are used for almost everything — restaurants, taxis, markets, tickets. Cash is rarely accepted in cities.

- Is China safe?: China consistently ranks among the safest countries for foreign tourists. Violent crime against visitors is extremely rare. Cities have extensive CCTV coverage and a visible police presence.
- Emergency numbers: Police: 110. Ambulance: 120. Your concierge is your first call for any non-emergency situation — she has local contacts for every city on the itinerary.
- Health & medications: Bring a full supply of any prescription medication. International pharmacies exist in major cities but may not carry your brand. Travel insurance is required — we can recommend policies that cover China specifically.
- Language: English fluency outside hotels and tourist sites is limited. Your guides all speak English. We provide a printed pocket card with essential Chinese phrases and emergency contacts for every traveller.

## Before You Book

Everything worth knowing before you book.

### My parents are in their seventies. Is there anywhere on this trip they can't get to?

No. Every ascent on this route is done by lift or cable car: the cable car up to Mutianyu Great Wall, the Bailong Elevator up to the Yuanjiajie clifftop, the cable car up Tianzi Mountain. The clifftop paths are level and the viewpoints are minutes apart. The one walking section along the Golden Whip Stream is flat valley floor. Your guide cuts it to your party on the day, between one and three hours.

### Can you get us rooms that connect?

Not yet, and we will not pretend otherwise. Connecting and family room types are the one thing this route is still waiting on in all four cities. Until a bookable type is confirmed and named in your written confirmation, we take no order and no deposit on this route. What you get in the meantime is a straight answer per city as each one lands, and your dates held in the conversation rather than in a payment.

### We're American. Do we need a visa for this one?

Yes. The US is not on the 30-day visa-free list. This plan runs 12 days, which is longer than the 10-day visa-free transit policy allows, so there is no second route. Every US guest travels on a Chinese visa: tourist or business, including 10-year multiple-entry. Fees and processing are not in your price, the in-person appointment and fingerprints need time before departure, and we confirm the visa is in hand before any payment. If you already entered China under the transit policy, this route does not work for you and we say so rather than sell it.

### What happens if the mountain is fogged in?

Fog closes the Yuanjiajie viewpoints some mornings and no one can promise a clear one. Two things absorb it: the two mountain days swap on the ground, so the walking day takes the fog and the viewpoint day takes the clear one; and if both days are fogged out, we arrange the evening light show at Tianmen Mountain at our cost. You still come back with the elevator, the valley floor, the stream and the loom, all of which read the same in cloud.

### Will the children be bored on the palace day?

Usually not, because that day is only half palace. The Forbidden City is walked in one direction and finishes in the garden, then the afternoon goes to a workbench where children paste, press and stitch a cloth sole and take the finished piece home. If your children are very young, tell us and we shorten the palace half and lengthen the bench half.
