When the Portuguese first landed near the temple centuries ago, they asked the locals for the name of the land, but the locals misunderstood, thinking that the Portuguese were asking for the name of the bay beside the temple. The locals replied with 'A-Ma Gau' (A-Ma Bay). In modern Cantonese, 'Macau' (Ou Mun) means 'gateway of the bay' which became the name of the land.
